Seoyoung My Daughter – Episode 39-40

Seoyoung My Daughter has been relatively light on morose drinking scenes, but in this episode, it’s soju all around.

Ji Seon confirms that she did NOT trust her husband for 20 years as she told Seo Yeong. Which means her shock was more a case of wounded pride than wounded feelings, no? However, I think she did expect, if not trust, that Ki Beom would protect her reputation, since it reflected on him. Maybe that’s why her summation of betrayal in her conversation with Seo Young is so succinct.

Whenever I’m tempted to feel sorry for Sam Jae (which is often), I remember how he stole his wife’s money, and how his homeless family slept in the the 찜질방 (jimjilbang = public baths) when he deserted them.

However, it wasn’t quite fair of Woo Jae MORE…

Seoyoung My Daughter – Episode 37-38

Episode 37

Yikes! Episode 37 of Seo Young My Daughter opens with a hair-raising demonstration of the scariest driving ever. Raise your hand if being run off the road by your honey is on your relationship dealbreaker list.
Seoyeong pulls away from Ujae who has run her car off the road and grabbed her by the arm in the middle of the street
Ki Beom has a hilariously ironic tirade about lying and family values. His hypocrisy is completely invisible to him. Until Ji Seon’s damning faint praise that he’s the best of the betrayers in her life, that is.

I’m not sure how far back it goes, but there is a tradition of women drummers in Korea, and it isn’t hard to see why. They have to release the stress and frustration of all that sexism somewhere. I hope Ji Seon’s drumming session clears her shock so she thinks of asking Seo Young for an explanation.

You’d never guess Sang Woo had been MORE…

Seoyoung My Daughter – Episode 35-36

Episode 35
Oooo, that Seon Woo is so evil. Can you believe she’s actually criticizing Mi Kyung for acting unselfishly?! Hate her! Mi Kyung, who has grown up a little, is feisty enough to take her, but I doubt Seon Woo can be trusted to keep Seo Young’s secret. Not that it’s much of a secret anymore.
Seon Woo looks up the walkway to Lee Sang Woo's front gate
And then Seon Woo has the gall to wonder why Seo Young wants nothing to do with her. Gee, could it be because she’s an obsessive, competitive bully who’s trying to undermine Seo Young and her marriage at every turn? Here’s a tip: Not a recipe for friendship! It was great to see the spirit of the old Seo Young rise to that occasion.

Poor Yoon So Mi. All those years of MORE…

Seoyoung My Daughter – Episode 31-32

The dominoes are finally starting to fall, as we knew they must.

Sung Jae’s birth secret is unveiled at last – partly. But who’s the daddy? His adopted father seemed genuinely surprised by the baby on his doorstep, and his exec’s interest in Sung Jae (Lee Jung Shin), so I suspect the cliffhanger ending will turn out to be the exec’s refusal to tell them who the biological father is. Unless MORE…

Seoyoung My Daughter – Episode 29-30

Seoyoung My Daughter is teetering precariously on the soap opera cliffs again in Episode 29, but pulls back a little in Episode 30. You can see “I’m not worthy of this woman, and what am I doing to her?” written all over Sang Woo’s face when he’s with Ho Jeong (Choi Yoon Young). Good question. What a contrast Ho Jeong is to Mi Kyung! Just goes to show you, rich girls can be humble. Or at least emotionally intelligent about getting their way.
Seoyoung My Daughter Episode 30 Sang Woo holds a blushing Ho Jeong's hand after putting her ring on and tells her they'll get closer over time

Her cup is full. His plate is empty.

Seoyoung My Daughter – Episode 27-28

Episodes 27 & 28 of Seoyoung My Daughter brings us more loan sharks. Goody! As long as they aren’t tamed into sympathetic characters later. I love a good tragic villain, but loan sharks are just scummy. And how can we relieve our stress without villains to hate? This is entertainment, not church. Moral ambiguity just isn’t relaxing.

Ho Jeong's mother covers her mouth with a scarf to disguise her identity as she spies on Ho Jeong and Sang Woo

Love the way people skulk in Kdrama, bending over, tiptoeing, and covering their eyes like 3 year olds to make themselves invisible to others. Because that won’t attract attention.

Seoyoung My Daughter – Episode 25-26

Seoyoung My Daughter is turning into A Valuable Lesson on the Pitfalls of Workplace Romance. Park Hae Jin is doing an excellent portrayal of a man at the end of his rope. But it could never be enough to justify Sang Woo’s exploitation of Ho Jeong’s feelings. Just change hospitals, dude. Sheesh.

Another prominent theme in episodes 25-26 of Seoyoung My Daughter is Overlooking the Obvious. How can people smart enough to become medical residents not have figured out that something is going on between Sang Woo and Mi Kyung?? MORE…

Seoyoung My Daughter – Episode 23-24

Woo Jae smiles as as he walks on the beach with Seo YoungHmm, once again Seoyoung My Daughter is crashing on the rocky shoals of makjang, as the soap opera sound track swells in the background. Bludgeoning us with expositional music is an insult to the actors. Lee Sang Woo is doing a particularly excellent transformation, requiring no assistance whatsoever from swoopy violins.

Sang Woo has finally uttered an apology! There’s something I wasn’t sure I’d ever see. MORE…

Seoyoung My Daughter – Episode 21-22

Alright, alright, I admit it. I have reconciled with Seoyoung My Daughter. You know how some dramas get stuck in an interminable, excruciating, who-can-be-the-most-dysfunctional loop for episode after episode after episode, kind of like a Kdrama marathon hosted by Jerry Springer? I feared Seoyoung My Daughter had gone down that road, but it seems to have pulled itself back before it got hopelessly mired.

Park Hae Jin, in particular, is growing on me. MORE…
